Nigeria Among Best In Air Accident Investigation – BAGAIA
Nigeria is one of the best in air accident investigation in the world.
Charles Erhueh, the Commissioner of Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIR), said this while speaking at a peer review exercise of the aviation industry in Abuja.
He described Nigeria as the “peak performer in the West African region” considering the seven countries that formed part of the Banjul Accord Group.
Erhuen said the countries included Sierra Leone, Cape Verde, Ghana, Liberia, Guinea, Gambia and Nigeria.
He said Nigeria had demonstrated excellent practices and capabilities and stood out as one of the best in the world in terms of air accident investigation.
The commissioner praised the Nigerian aviation authorities for its infrastructure, human resources and overall processes, but stressed the need for better documentation of these processes.
He said it was important to have well-documented processes, adding that documentation would ensure the smooth continuation of tasks even when new personnel join the team.
Akin Olateru, the Director-General of Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), said Nigeria had entered into a partnership with BAGAIR in the bid to improve the capacity of its safety investigation agencies.
He said the partnership would help Nigeria to remain among countries with the best aviation air safety records in the world.
Olateru said the peer review was to benchmark Nigerian systems, processes and procedures.
“This programme is basically for collaboration. You know aviation is all about collaboration. This is the only way we can ensure consistency in maintaining that safety record.
“Nigeria as a country today, has one of the best aviation safety records because how do you measure safety, you measure the number of accidents, you measure the number of fatal accidents, you measure serious accidents and occurrences.
“The fewer occurrences, the better you are. You have some airlines have never recorded fatal crashes and they have been around for over 100 years, So, that’s an indicator of safety.”
