COVID-19: Bowen University Sacks Over 100 Workers

The Management of Bowen University  in Iwo, Osun State, has sacked over of its workforce.

Toba Adaramola, the institution’s head of media and public relations unit, broke the news in a statement on Wednesday.

According to him, the development was informed by the situation of things which makes it unsustainable to accommodate “excess workers.”

Adaramola said the affected staff where notified of their disengagement through an email shortly after receiving salary for June on Tuesday.

He added that about 10 percent of the university’s workforce — which cuts across both the academic and non-academic — were affected.

“When the present management of the institution came on board in 2018, it was discovered that the school was at the point of inflection,” the statement read.

“When the management studied the situation, it was discovered that we must change our culture of doing things, or change product.

“Our students are our product; that we cannot change. But we decided to change the model the school had operated. The school had for long operated like public institutions; whereas public institutions have grant, we don’t have. That situation led to change of model from the previous to collegiate backed with technology.

“To sustain the university, some people have to go. So the excess workers in all departments and sections were told to go. It cuts across both the academic and non-academic.

“Eight to 10 per cent of the workforce was affected. June salary was paid yesterday (Tuesday) and after the payment, the affected workers were intimated of the disengagement through mail.”

It would be recalled that some weeks ago  the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola, Adamawa, disengaged about 400 of its staff.
