NUJ Lauds Ikpeazu’s Developmental Strides, Wants Legal Backing For Ebubeagu

The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Abia State Council, has commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu-led administration in the State for bringing about infrastructural rebirth in the commercial city of Aba and urged the government not to rest on its oars.
The NUJ also commended the State government for joining the rest of the South East States in floating the Ebubeagu security outfit expected to boost security in the region.
The Union enjoined Governor Ikpeazu to work with the State House of Assembly to give the regional security outfit a legal backing and make it operational.
The commendation was contained in a communique jointly signed by the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Victor Ndukwe and the Secretary, Adaeze Ralph Igbokwe at the end of its Congress held at press centre in Umuahia.
The Union further called on the Abia State Government to reinvigorate its efforts in checking the activities of herders in the local government areas, especially in Isuikwuato local government area where people now live in fear and could not go about their normal businesses due to activities of herders who are alleged to have taken over some parts of the Council.
The Abia Council of NUJ urged the State government, in liaison with all security agencies in the State, to take proactive steps to stem the spate of attacks on security formations in the State, pointing out that such attacks were taking its toll on personnel and infrastructure of the Police and rendering society vulnerable to hoodlums.
The Union also passed a vote of confidence on the National President of NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, for his dynamic, purposeful and result-oriented leadership which have lifted the Union to higher heights, urging him to remain focused in the discharge of his official duties.
The communique partly stated, “the Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held its Monthly Congress on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, the first under the recently elected Comrade Victor Ndukwe-led executive, at the NUJ Press Centre, Umuahia and crucial issues affecting the Union and the State were discussed.
“After exhaustive deliberations, the Congress resolved as follows: That Congress notes the efforts of the state government in ensuring resolution of boundary disputes but urges the government to do more to protect all boundary communities in the wake of various boundary conflicts, some of them leading to loss of lives.
“Congress urges the state Boundary Committee and National Boundary Commission to ensure urgent demarcation of boundaries between feuding border communities as a means of finding permanent solution to the lingering border issues.
“Congress urges the state government prevail on the federal government to give urgent attention to the dilapidated Ututu-Nkana-Ikot Okpora road which traverses the three states of Abia, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, as well as other dilapidated federal roads in the state begging for attention because of their economic importance.
“That Congress commends federal lawmakers from the state for their efforts in attracting various projects to the state and implores them to do more.
“Congress also urges the public to cooperate with government and its contractors executing various projects, rather than hamper or disrupt ongoing projects but channel their grievances, if any, to appropriate quarters.
“Congress enjoined the Ministry of Transport and Umuahia North/Umuahia South local government authorities to clearly designate bus stops and no-parking zones in the Capital City of Umuahia to end the constant harassment/molestation/extortion of motorists/tricycle operators by touts”.
