Lagos State has launched a health insurance scheme to make access to health care affordable for its more than 20 million residents.

Under the scheme, residents will have access to care in any hospital of their choice for N8,500 per year, while a family of six will pay N40,000, the Lagos State government said in a statement on Twitter.

Some of the benefits of this plan include treatment for common diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, diabetes and hypertension, and access to family planning services, laboratory tests and ultrasounds.

According to General Manager, Lagos State Health Management Agency, Emmanuella Zamba, the state government will ensure that treatments and other services will be of high quality.

She said on Tuesday that Lagos residents can enroll immediately.

Lagos State has now become the second state in the country to put up such scheme. Ekiti State rolled out a similar plan in July.
