COVID-19: ILO Postpones Annual Conference Till 2021
The International Labour Organization , ILO, has postponed its upcoming annual conference due to the global spread of coronavirus.
The conference, which was originally scheduled for May 21, has now been shifted to June 5, 2021, in Geneva, Switzerland.
The ILO said the decision as regarding the 109th session of the International Labour Conference was made ‘light of severe worldwide travel restrictions’ to ensure the health of staff and delegates.
The meeting is held to discuss key issues relating to the world of work, craft and adopt international labour standards and monitor their implementation.
As a result of this postponement, ILO says the associated 338th and 339th sessions of the ILO governing body, scheduled for May 25 and June 6, 2020, respectively, will also not take place.
The organization said it would continue to work with partners in different countries and constituents despite the suspension of the conference.
“Despite the deferral of the conference, the ILO and all its offices around the world are operational and will continue to work closely with its constituents, development partners and the multilateral system,” the statement read.
During the conference, ILO brings together government, employer and labour representatives of its 187 member states to deliberate on the future of work.
